Driving in Albania, what to expect

Albania is one of Europe's great road trips: empty mountain passes, a coast that bends around every cove, and a coffee stop every twenty minutes. It also drives a little differently to home. Here's what we tell every guest before they take the keys.

Licence & paperwork

Your home driving licence (EU, UK, US and most others) is fine for a tourist stay. If yours isn't in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit; it's cheap insurance at a checkpoint. Keep your passport and the rental contract in the car; we hand over insurance and ownership papers with the keys.

Roads & which car

Main roads are good asphalt and improving every year, but the last kilometre to the best beaches and viewpoints is often gravel. The Yaris or Golf 6 Plus handles the coast and the old towns; for rougher mountain lanes to Theth or Bovilla, take the Golf 6 Plus Cross with its higher clearance. And treat Google Maps' drive times as optimistic; add a third, more in the mountains.

Local driving style

Overtaking is enthusiastic, the odd cow or reversing car appears on the highway, and a tap of the horn just means 'I'm here'. Drive defensively, leave a gap, and don't tackle a mountain road in the dark on your first night. None of it is scary once you expect it; it's just busier than you might be used to.

Checkpoints, fuel & parking

Police checkpoints are routine: slow down, show your licence and papers, and you're waved on in seconds. Belt up front and back, no phone in hand. Fill up in towns before heading into the mountains, and carry some lek cash for village parking and city paid zones.
