Bovilla is close to Tirana but still feels wild. The reservoir sits in a limestone gorge under Gamti Mountain, and its colour, a deep mineral turquoise, changes by the hour.

    Pickup in central Tirana

    We collect you from your hotel and trade the boulevard for switchbacks in about forty minutes.

    Trailhead briefing

    Water topped up, route explained. The trail is stepped and secured with handrails on the steepest parts.

    Gamti viewpoint

    The full panorama: turquoise lake, grey cliffs, green ridgelines. We allow a generous amount of photo time.

  4. 11:30

    Lakeside farm visit

    Descend and drive to a family farm above the shore. Mountain tea, raki for the willing, honey straight from the hive.

    Back in Tirana

    Dropped at your hotel, with the rest of the afternoon free.

Full Description

We pick you up in the city, handle the rough mountain road in our 4x4 vans, and walk you up the stepped trail to the Gamti viewpoint platform. It's about 30–40 minutes up, steep but short, and worth it. Afterwards we drop down to a lakeside farm restaurant for honey, cheese and mountain tea (or a full lunch if you're hungry).

The Gamti Mountain viewpoint trail itself is the heart of the trip: a stepped path climbing about 250 metres from the trailhead, with handrails on the exposed sections and benches where the view starts to open up. From the platform you look straight down the Bovilla canyon, where the lake narrows between sheer limestone walls, and out across the reservoir to the ridgelines of the Skanderbeg range. Sunrise and late morning give the best light on the water.

Good to know

  • The viewpoint trail climbs ~250 m of steps. Take it slow; the guide sets an easy pace.
  • Not suitable for travellers with serious knee or heart conditions.
  • Runs year-round; in summer we only run morning departures due to heat.

Good questions, honest answers

How hard is the Bovilla Lake viewpoint hike?

Short but steep: about 250 metres of stepped climbing to the Gamti viewpoint, taking most people 30 to 40 minutes at an easy pace. There are handrails on the steepest parts and no scrambling. If you can climb stairs for half an hour with breaks, you can do this trail.

Can you visit Bovilla Lake without a 4x4?

The last stretch of road is rough gravel with potholes, and normal rental cars regularly turn back or scrape. It's doable in a high-clearance car driven slowly, but it's the main reason our trip uses 4x4 vans from central Tirana; you skip both the road stress and the parking scrum at the trailhead.

Can you swim in Bovilla Lake?

No. Bovilla is Tirana's drinking-water reservoir and swimming is prohibited. The reward here is the view from the Gamti platform over the canyon and the turquoise water, plus the lakeside farm stop afterwards for honey, cheese and mountain tea.
