Berat is the town on every Albania postcard: tiers of white Ottoman houses stacked above the Osum river, each one watching you back through dark wooden windows. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and people still live in it.

    Pickup in Tirana

    Comfortable minivan, good coffee stop on the way. The drive to Berat takes about two hours through olive country.

  2. 10:15

    Berat Castle quarter

    Walk the ramparts, meet residents of the castle neighbourhood, and take in the view over the Osum valley.

  3. 12:00

    Onufri National Museum

    Inside the castle's cathedral: home to icons painted with a red pigment whose recipe died with the artist.

  4. 13:00

    Traditional lunch in Mangalem

    A long table in an Ottoman-era house: stuffed peppers, slow-cooked lamb, mountain herbs, and the local speciality, përshesh.

  5. 15:00

    Gorica quarter & the stone bridge

    Cross the 1780s Gorica Bridge for the classic photo of the thousand windows, then explore the quieter left-bank lanes.

  6. 16:00

    Family winery visit

    Five wines, home-cured olives, and a winemaker who loves to talk. We taste the indigenous Pulës grape.

  7. 19:00

    Return to Tirana

    Back in the capital by early evening, full and happy.

Full Description

We start inside Berat Castle, a fortress neighbourhood where families still live behind Byzantine walls, then wander down through the Mangalem quarter's cobbled lanes. After a long traditional lunch (slow food is the only speed here), we visit the Onufri Museum's astonishing 16th-century icons and finish with a tasting at a family winery outside town, including the local Pulës grape you won't find anywhere else on earth.
