5.063 Google reviewsDay trip from Durrës, Golem or Qerret

From the Durrës resorts Kruja is an hour inland and slightly uphill, and the extra time over the Tirana trip buys you the part most visitors miss entirely: Sari Salltik, a Bektashi shrine built into a cave on the mountain ridge high above the castle.

Experience & Highlights

  • Kruja Castle and the Skanderbeg Museum
  • The Ethnographic Museum in an Ottoman house
  • The old bazaar, with an hour to haggle
  • Sari Salltik cave shrine at 1,200 metres
  • Traditional lunch with a view over the plain

Full Description

We start below, in the fortress. Skanderbeg held these walls through three Ottoman sieges, and the Skanderbeg Museum inside makes the case at considerable volume. The Ethnographic Museum nearby, in a 19th-century Ottoman house with its looms and olive press intact, is the calmer half of the pair. Then the bazaar: one cobbled lane of wooden shopfronts, kilims, filigree silver and copper, the last of its kind still trading.

After lunch we drive the mountain road up to Sari Salltik. The shrine sits in a cave at around 1,200 metres, reached by a stairway cut into the rock, and it is an active pilgrimage site rather than a display. The view from the terrace runs the length of the coastal plain to the sea.

Good to know

  • Sari Salltik is an active shrine. Cover shoulders and knees, and take your shoes off at the cave entrance.
  • The stairway to the cave is steep with a handrail. It takes about ten minutes and there is a bench halfway.
  • Both museums close on Mondays, in which case we spend longer at the shrine and on the walls.
  • The mountain road to Sari Salltik can close in snow, usually only in January and February.

Good questions, honest answers

What is Sari Salltik in Kruja?

A Bektashi shrine built into a cave on the ridge at around 1,200 metres above the town, named after a dervish saint. It is a working pilgrimage site, reached by a stairway cut into the rock, and the terrace outside looks out over the coastal plain to the Adriatic.

How long does it take to get to Kruja from Golem?

About an hour and a quarter, inland and then up the switchbacks. Adding Sari Salltik above the town is what turns this into a full eight-hour day rather than the half day people do from Tirana.

Do I need to dress a certain way for the shrine?

Shoulders and knees covered, and shoes off at the cave entrance. Bektashi practice is relaxed compared with most, and nobody will be sharp with you, but the site is in daily use and it is worth getting right.
