Holta Canyon & Banja Lake Day Trip from Durrës

5.063 Google reviewsDay trip from Durrës, Golem or Qerret

Holta is the best-value adventure day on this coast, and almost nobody staying in Durrës knows it exists. The canyon cuts into the hills behind Gramsh, about two hours inland, and you walk it from the inside: in the water, over smooth rock, with the limestone walls narrowing overhead until they are barely wider than your shoulders.

Experience & Highlights

  • Walk the Holta slot canyon from the inside, in the water
  • Cold canyon water on the hottest days of summer
  • Picnic lunch and a swim at Banja Lake
  • Hotel pickup anywhere in Durrës, Golem or Qerret
  • Small groups and a guide who walks the canyon weekly

Full Description

The water sits at knee to waist height for most of the route and stays cold through August, which is exactly why this trip works in the heat of summer when the beach is unbearable by noon. There is one deeper pool you can swim across if you want to, and a dry ledge around it if you would rather not.

Afterwards we drive to Banja Lake, the turquoise reservoir on the Devoll river, and set up a long picnic lunch on the shore. Swimming here is easy and warm, the opposite of the canyon. You are back at your hotel in time for dinner.

What's included

  • Hotel pickup and drop-off in Durrës, Golem and Qerret
  • Air-conditioned transport
  • English-speaking canyon guide
  • Picnic lunch and soft drinks
  • Bottled water throughout the day

Not included

  • Water shoes (bring them, or rent a pair for €5)
  • Towels, please bring your own
  • Alcoholic drinks

Good to know

  • You will be wet from the waist down for two hours. Wear a swimsuit under quick-dry clothes and bring a full change.
  • Water shoes with a grippy sole are essential. Flip-flops do not work on wet limestone.
  • The canyon runs May through early October. Heavy rain can raise the water and close it, in which case we swap to Banja Lake and a nearby waterfall and refund the difference.
  • Not suitable for non-swimmers under 10 or travellers with balance difficulties.

Good questions, honest answers

How deep is the water in Holta Canyon?

Knee to waist deep for most of the walk, with one pool of about 15 metres that is over your head. There is a dry ledge around that pool, so you can do the whole canyon without swimming if you prefer. The water is cold all summer, which is why it works so well in July and August.

How far is Holta Canyon from Durrës?

About two hours each way, inland past Elbasan towards Gramsh. That makes it a full nine-hour day door to door, which is why we leave at 07:30 and build a long lunch and swim at Banja Lake into the return.

Do I need to be fit to walk Holta Canyon?

Reasonably. There is no climbing and no rope work, but you spend two hours walking upstream against a current on uneven, slippery rock. If you can manage a two-hour walk on a rough path you will be fine. Children from about 8 do it comfortably with a parent.
