Kruja Castle & Old Bazaar Day Trip

Kruja sits on a shelf of mountain above the plain, and the reason it mattered is obvious the moment you stand on the castle wall: you can see anyone coming from an hour away. Skanderbeg held this place against three Ottoman sieges in the 1450s and 60s, which is why he is on the currency and in every square in the country.

Full Description

The Skanderbeg Museum inside the walls was designed in 1982 by Enver Hoxha's daughter and son-in-law, and it is a strange, theatrical building: a concrete keep full of banners, replica armour and frescoes, more monument than museum. The small Ethnographic Museum a hundred metres away, in a 19th-century Ottoman house, is quieter and, for most people, the better of the two.

Below the gate runs the old bazaar, a cobbled lane of wooden shopfronts that is the last of its kind still trading in Albania. It is touristy, and it is also where you buy real things: hand-woven kilims, filigree silver, copper, and antiques of mixed provenance. Haggling is expected and good-natured.

What's included

  • Hotel pickup and drop-off in Tirana
  • Air-conditioned transport
  • English-speaking guide
  • Bottled water

Not included

  • Skanderbeg Museum entry (€2)
  • Ethnographic Museum entry (€2)
  • Lunch and drinks
  • Anything you buy in the bazaar

Good to know

  • The bazaar lane and the castle approach are cobbled and steep in places. Flat shoes with grip are worth it.
  • Both museums close on Mondays. On Mondays we spend longer on the walls and the bazaar.
  • Bring cash in small notes for the bazaar. Card is accepted in very few shops.
  • Runs year-round. The view from the walls is clearest in spring and autumn.

Good questions, honest answers

How far is Kruja from Tirana?

About 40 minutes, 35 kilometres north and then a short climb up the mountain switchbacks. It is the easiest real day trip from the capital, which is why we run it as a half day rather than a full one.

Is Kruja bazaar worth visiting or is it a tourist trap?

Both. It is the last Ottoman bazaar still trading in Albania and the lane itself is the real thing. The stock ranges from mass-produced souvenirs to good hand-woven kilims, filigree silver and copper. Haggle, take your time, and ask the guide before you commit to anything expensive.

What is there to see in Kruja besides the castle?

The Ethnographic Museum in an Ottoman house below the walls, which most people rate above the Skanderbeg Museum, and the bazaar. Above the town there is also the Sari Salltik cave shrine, a Bektashi pilgrimage site, though reaching it needs a full day rather than this half-day trip.
