The 12 Best Beaches in Albania (From Someone Who Grew Up on Them)

Everyone arrives in Albania with the same screenshot: Ksamil, milky-blue water, tiny islands. Ksamil is real and it is lovely, in early June or late September. In August it is a parking lot with a sea view. The good news is that the Albanian coast runs for almost 450 kilometres, and most of its best water never makes it to Instagram.

This ranking comes from people who learned to swim on these beaches. We've ordered it by beauty and by how realistic each one is to reach before the crowds arrive.

The headline acts: Ksamil, Gjipe and Dhërmi

Ksamil earns its fame on water colour alone: shallow, sandy-bottomed and a vivid turquoise. Go in shoulder season, arrive before 9, and take the paddle boat out to the islands before the crowds wake up. Nearby Butrint National Park makes it a great double act.

Gjipe is the one we recommend most often: a canyon mouth opening onto white pebbles, reachable only on foot (25 minutes down from the road) or by boat. The walk filters out 90% of the crowd. Bring water and cash; the small beach bar runs on both.

Dhërmi has become the Riviera's polished resort strip, but the water is still spectacular and the village above, stone houses and cypress, is worth the climb at sunset.

The locals' picks: Livadhi, Jale and Aquarium Bay

Livadhi, just north of Himarë, is a long horseshoe of pebbles with olive terraces behind it and space even in July. It's where Himarë families go on Sundays, which tells you everything.

Jale sits between Gjipe and Dhërmi: smaller, younger, with campsite energy in summer. The water over the white seabed glows. Aquarium Bay next door is a snorkelling bowl you can only reach by boat or a scramble; our Riviera boat tour stops there for exactly this reason.

Boat-only beauties: Kroreza, Kakome and the Karaburun coast

The best water in the country touches beaches with no road at all. Kroreza and Kakome, between Sarandë and Himarë, are reachable by water taxi from Sarandë: calm, empty, and shockingly clear.

The Karaburun Peninsula near Vlora is the wild card: a marine park of caves and cliff-walled coves, with Sazan Island offshore. There is no land access. A full-day boat trip from Vlora Marina covers Haxhi Ali Cave, the lagoon at Dafina and two or three swim stops; it's the single best sea day in Albania.

The quiet north: Rana e Hedhun and the Cape of Rodon

North of Durrës the coast turns sandy and soft. Rana e Hedhun near Shëngjin ('the thrown sand') is a dune spilling down a pine hillside straight into the sea. The Cape of Rodon pairs a crumbling Skanderbeg-era castle with calm family-friendly beaches. Neither looks like the Riviera; both are worth a slow afternoon.

How to choose

If you have one day and want maximum drama, take a boat from Vlora or Himarë. If you're road-tripping the Riviera, base in Himarë for three nights and day-trip to Gjipe, Livadhi and Jale. If you're in the deep south, do Ksamil at dawn and spend the afternoon at Butrint. And whichever you pick, the sea is warmest from late June through October, and September is the best month of all.
