Roadless coves, a village taverna with no menu, and a viewpoint most visitors miss.
The Riviera's headline beaches earn their fame, but the coast keeps its best moments for people willing to walk ten extra minutes, drive one unmarked turn-off, or simply ask. These are the places we take friends who say they've 'already seen' the Albanian coast. Go gently; half the magic is that nobody's there.
The coves without roads
Between Dhërmi and Himarë the cliffs hide coves with no names on the map and no path wider than a goat's preference. Aquarium Bay is the famous one (clear water, good snorkelling), but ask a boat captain in Himarë about Filikuri and you'll get the better story and the emptier beach. Boat is the only way in, which is why they stay empty.
Old Himarë, above the new
Most visitors never leave Himarë's waterfront. The old village sits 200 metres up the hill: a half-ruined, half-revived castle town with views down the whole silver coast. Come for the hour before sunset, when the stone goes gold and the only sound is swallows. The small church at the top has been watching the sea for eight centuries.
The taverna with no menu
In Qeparo (the steep old half, not the beach strip) there's a family taverna where lunch is whatever the grandmother cooked that morning. You sit under a vine, plates arrive, and at some point someone brings raki you didn't order. We won't print the name; walk the village's one main lane and you'll find it. That's the system, and it works.
Pilur: the balcony nobody visits
A switchback road climbs from the coast to Pilur, a village 600 metres above the sea. The viewpoint at the edge of the village sees the entire Riviera from Llogara to Sarandë in one frame. On a clear evening you can watch boats draw white lines across a navy sea while sheep bells ring behind you. Locals come up here; the road keeps tour buses away.
Go this year
None of this is secret. The Riviera is just changing fast. New hotels open every season and the unmarked turn-offs get signposts eventually. The window where you can have a Mediterranean cove entirely to yourself is closing the way it closed in Greece and Croatia. It's still open here. Use it.
