Albania has been making wine for a very long time and very little of it leaves the country, which means most visitors have never met the local grapes. The hills around Berat are the heart of it, and a couple of family wineries here are doing things well enough to be worth the half day.

Experience & Highlights

  • Two family wineries in the hills around Berat
  • Native grapes: Shesh i Zi, Puls and Kallmet
  • Vineyard and cellar walk with the family that runs it
  • Farm cheese, cured meat and olives with the tasting
  • Transport both ways, so nobody has to drive

Full Description

We visit two. At each the family walks you through the vineyard and the cellar and then pours: Shesh i Zi, a dark, soft red that is the most planted grape in the country; Puls, a white native to the Berat hills; Kallmet, a northern red with more structure. Raki from the same grapes comes out at the end whether you ask for it or not.

Food is served with the tasting at the second stop: cheese from the farm, cured meat, olives, bread and whatever the kitchen has on. It is not a lunch exactly, but you will not need one afterwards.

What's included

  • Pickup and drop-off in Berat
  • Visits and tastings at two wineries
  • Food with the second tasting
  • English-speaking guide

Good to know

  • Minimum age 18 for the tastings. Younger family members are welcome and get juice.
  • Tell us about dietary requirements when booking. The food is heavy on cheese and cured meat by default.
  • Most wineries will ship within the EU if you want more than you can carry. Ask at the cellar.
  • Runs year-round. Harvest is in September, when the cellars are at their busiest and most interesting.

Good questions, honest answers

Is Albanian wine any good?

Some of it is very good, and very little of it is exported, so it is hard to try anywhere else. The native grapes are the interest: Shesh i Zi and Kallmet for reds, Puls and Shesh i Bardhë for whites. Quality varies a lot between producers, which is why we pick the wineries.

What grapes are grown around Berat?

Shesh i Zi is the main red, soft and dark. Puls is a white grape native to the Berat area. Many wineries also grow Kallmet, originally from the north, and some international varieties. The tastings focus on the local grapes.

Do I need to stay in Berat for this tour?

Yes, it starts and ends in Berat. If you are coming from Tirana for the day, the Berat day trip already includes a family winery visit and is the better option.
