Bovilla Lake & Gamti Hike from Durrës

Staying in Tirana rather than on the coast? See the half-day version from the capital →

5.063 Google reviewsDay trip from Durrës, Golem or Qerret

Bovilla is the most photographed spot near Tirana, and from the Durrës resorts it is a comfortable day rather than a rushed one. We pick you up on the coast, skirt the capital, and take the rough mountain road up to the trailhead in 4x4 vans.

Itinerary

For reference only. Itineraries are subject to change.

  1. 07:30

    Pickup along the Durrës coast

Collected from your hotel in Durrës, Golem or Qerret. Coffee stop on the way if the group wants one.

  2. 09:15

    Trailhead briefing

The last stretch of road is gravel and potholed, which is why we use 4x4 vans. Water topped up, route explained.

  3. 09:45

    Climb to the Gamti viewpoint

Stepped path, roughly 250 metres of ascent with handrails on the steep parts. Generous time at the top for photographs.

  4. 11:30

    Farm lunch above the lake

Down to a family farm on the shore road. Grilled meat, village salad, honey straight from the hive, raki for the willing.

  5. 14:00

    Preza Castle

A small 15th-century Ottoman fort on a hill between Tirana and Durrës. The terrace looks out over the whole coastal plain.

  6. 16:00

    Back to your hotel

On the coast by late afternoon with the evening free.

Experience & Highlights

  • The Gamti Mountain viewpoint over Bovilla Lake
  • Pickup from Durrës, Golem and Qerret, no Tirana transfer
  • 4x4 vans on the rough section of mountain road
  • Farm lunch above the lake: honey, cheese, mountain tea
  • Preza Castle and the Adriatic view on the way back

Full Description

The walk to the Gamti viewpoint is short and steep: about 250 metres of stepped climbing, 30 to 40 minutes at an easy pace, handrails on the exposed sections. From the platform the reservoir sits directly below you, squeezed between limestone walls, a mineral turquoise that changes colour through the morning.

Because we are not racing back to Tirana we add two things the city trips skip. There is a proper lunch at a farm above the lake, and a stop at Preza Castle on the drive home, where the terrace looks west over the plain to the Adriatic and back east to the mountains you just climbed.

Good to know

  • The viewpoint trail climbs about 250 metres of steps. The guide sets an easy pace and there is no rush.
  • Swimming in Bovilla is prohibited: it is Tirana's drinking-water reservoir.
  • Runs year-round. In July and August we leave early to get the climb done before the heat.
  • Not suitable for travellers with serious knee or heart conditions.

Good questions, honest answers

How long is the drive from Durrës to Bovilla Lake?

About an hour and three quarters each way, skirting Tirana and then climbing the Bovilla road. The last few kilometres are rough gravel, so the timing depends on the road surface more than the distance.

Is this different from the Bovilla trip from Tirana?

Same viewpoint, longer day. The Tirana trip is a half day and gets you back for lunch. This one starts on the coast, includes a sit-down farm lunch above the lake and adds Preza Castle on the way home, which the city version has no time for.

Can you swim in Bovilla Lake?

No. Bovilla supplies Tirana's drinking water and swimming is prohibited. If you want to swim on this side of the country, the Adriatic is a five-minute walk from your hotel.
