The Best Time to Visit Albania, Month by Month

The short version: June and September are the sweet spots, with warm sea, open mountain trails and fewer crowds. But every month here is different, and 'best' depends on whether you're coming for beaches, hiking or empty castles. Here's how the year goes, month by month.

Winter (December–February): the Alps to yourself

Coastal towns half-close, Tirana hums along under café awnings, and the mountains turn white. This is the season for city breaks, museum mornings and big hearty food, and for snowshoeing in Theth if you book a local guide. Gjirokastër and Berat in the quiet of January, stone streets wet and empty, are worth the cold.

Spring (March–May): wildflowers and waterfalls

The country goes green fast. April brings wildflowers to every hillside and full-throttle waterfalls to the valleys; May is one of the best months of all: warm enough to swim on lucky afternoons, perfect for the UNESCO towns, and the Theth road opens as the snow retreats. Crowds are thin everywhere. If you can travel in late May, do.

Summer (June, July and August): peak sea, peak heat

June is glorious: long days, a sea already warm, trails open, prices still sane. July and August are the full Mediterranean: water at 26°C, beach bars at capacity, and inland cities baking at 35°C+. The Riviera gets busy in August (it's the Albanian holiday month too), so book rooms and boat trips ahead, start days early, and aim the afternoons at the water. The Alps stay pleasantly cool: peak hiking season.

Albania in July specifically: expect 30–34°C on the coast, sea at 25–26°C, and 12+ hours of sunshine with almost no rain. It's an excellent month if you're here for the water and don't mind company; boats, Ksamil sunbeds and Theth guesthouses should all be booked several days ahead. Sightseeing days in Berat or Gjirokastër work best started by 8 am, with the afternoon saved for shade or the sea.

Autumn (September–November): the connoisseur's season

September might be the single best month: the sea holds its warmth deep into October, the crowds leave in the first week, and the light turns gold. October is harvest (grapes, olives, pomegranates) and still swimmable on the southern coast. November closes the high trails and opens the long-lunch season; it's the month for food-first trips and having Butrint nearly alone.

So: beaches, June or September. Hiking, the same. First trip covering everything? Late May to mid-June, or the first three weeks of September. Whenever you come, you'll wish you'd booked more days.
