The Kallmi headland sits at the northern end of Durrës bay, and behind the fish restaurants on the point there is a network of dirt tracks through pine woods and scrub that almost nobody on the beach below knows about. It is the closest off-road riding to the resorts, fifteen minutes from most hotels.

Itinerary

  1. 09:00

    Pickup

    From your hotel in Durrës or Golem. Fifteen to twenty-five minutes to the base on the Kallmi road.

  2. 09:30

    Kit and a lesson

    Helmet, goggles, and a practice lap on the flat until everyone is comfortable with the throttle and brakes.

  3. 10:00

    Up through the pines

    Dirt tracks up to the ridge, with the bay opening out as you climb.

  4. 10:45

    The bunker line

    A stop at the concrete bunkers along the headland, and the guide on what they were for and why there are 170,000 of them in the country.

  5. 11:15

    Beach stop

    Down to the small beach on the far side of Kallmi. Twenty minutes to swim or sit.

  6. 12:00

    Back to your hotel

    Ride back to base, then dropped at your hotel by about 12:30.

Full Description

The route runs up through the pines to the ridge, where the whole bay opens out below with the port cranes at one end and Golem at the other, then along past a line of concrete bunkers from the Hoxha years. We stop at one you can climb inside. Then down to a small beach on the far side of the headland for a swim before the ride back.

No licence needed. You get a lesson on the flat first and ride your own quad in single file behind the guide. Pillion seats for anyone who would rather be a passenger.

Good to know

  • Drivers must be 18 or over. Passengers from age 8 can ride pillion with an adult.
  • Wear closed shoes and clothes you do not mind getting dusty. It is dusty.
  • Morning and late afternoon departures in July and August. The midday one is too hot to be enjoyable.
  • Runs year-round in dry weather. Heavy rain cancels with a full refund.

Good questions, honest answers

Do I need a licence to drive an ATV in Durrës?

No. Drivers need to be 18 or over and get a lesson on the flat before the ride. Nobody is sent onto the tracks until the guide is happy they can handle the machine.

How far is Kallmi from Golem?

About twenty-five minutes by road, around the bay and past the port. From central Durrës it is closer to fifteen. It is the nearest real off-road riding to the resort strip.

Can children ride on the quad tour?

From age 8 as a pillion passenger behind an adult driver. Children cannot drive their own machine. Tell us when you book and we will bring a helmet in the right size.
