Shkodra is the right base for Komani and this is the trip that proves it. Pickup is at a civilised hour, the drive to the dam takes about two hours through the Drin valley, and you are on the ferry before the light gets flat.

Experience & Highlights

  • Two and a half hours through the Komani gorge
  • Speedboat into the Shala River valley
  • A longer stop at the river than the Tirana trips get
  • Back in Shkodra in time for dinner
  • Small group, hotel pickup across Shkodra

Full Description

The ferry runs two and a half hours up a flooded canyon with no road beside it. Then small boats turn off into the Shala, a tributary running down from Theth, where the water is pale green, cold, and clear enough to read the riverbed through. There is a pebble beach, loungers, lunch, and three hours to use them.

Because the driving is shorter, this version gets roughly an hour longer at the river than the Tirana departure does, and you are back in Shkodra for dinner rather than close to midnight.

What's included

  • Hotel pickup and drop-off in Shkodra
  • Return transport to Komani dam
  • Komani ferry ticket
  • Shala River boat transfer
  • English-speaking guide and bottled water

Not included

  • Lunch at the Shala River (about €10 to €15)
  • Sun loungers on the beach (€3 to €5)
  • Alcoholic drinks

Good to know

  • The Shala stays between 12 and 16 degrees even in August. Cold on entry, fine after a minute.
  • The ferry keeps a fixed schedule and does not wait for late arrivals, which is why pickup is firm at 07:00.
  • Bring a swimsuit, towel, sunscreen and one warm layer. The gorge funnels wind even on hot days.
  • Runs April through October. Outside those months the Shala boats do not operate.

Good questions, honest answers

How far is Komani Lake from Shkodra?

About two hours by road to the dam, up the Drin valley and through a rough single-lane tunnel at the end. It is the shortest practical approach to the ferry, which is why Shkodra is the usual base for this trip.

Is the Shkodra trip better than the one from Tirana?

It is four hours shorter and you get about an hour more at the Shala River. The trade-off is that you need to already be in the north. If you are based in Tirana or on the Durrës coast, the day return exists and plenty of people do it.

Do I need to book the Komani ferry separately?

No, the ferry ticket and the Shala boat transfer are both included. Booking through us also means your seat is held if the boat fills, which happens most days in July and August.
