Theth & Valbona: 3-Day Albanian Alps Escape

Starts and ends in Tirana or Shkodra

The Theth–Valbona trail is the most beautiful walk in the Balkans, and organising it independently means juggling ferries, furgons, mule transfers and guesthouse calls in three languages. We've packaged the whole thing: you carry a daypack, we handle everything else.

Itinerary

For reference only. Itineraries are subject to change.

  1. Day 1

    Tirana → Theth village

Morning transfer over the spectacular Qafa e Thorës road. Afternoon walk to the Grunas waterfall and the historic lock-in tower. Guesthouse dinner in Theth.

  2. Day 2

    The Valbona Pass crossing

The headline day: 17 km and around 1,000 m of climbing through beech forest, alpine meadows and the great pass itself. Coffee hut at the top, descent into Valbona. 6–8 hours walking.

  3. Day 3

Valbona → Komani Lake ferry → Tirana

Gentle valley morning, then the two-hour ferry through the Komani gorge; bring your camera and claim a spot on deck. Van back to Tirana by evening.

Experience & Highlights

  • Cross the Valbona Pass (1,800 m) between two national parks
  • Two nights in traditional mountain guesthouses, dinner included
  • The Komani Lake ferry through the fjord-like gorge
  • Luggage transferred by mule and van; you carry only a daypack

Full Description

Day one takes you into Theth village with its famous lock-in tower and the Grunas waterfall. Day two is the big one: the Valbona Pass crossing at 1,800 m, with long views in every direction. Day three returns you along the Valbona valley and across Komani Lake, a ferry ride through a steep, fjord-like gorge.

Nights are spent in family guesthouses where dinner is whatever the garden and the grandmother decided that morning. It's often the best food on the trip.

  • All transfers including the Komani Lake ferry
  • 2 nights in family guesthouses (half board: dinner & breakfast)
  • Certified mountain guide for the full route
  • Luggage transfer between valleys

Not included
