Ohrid & St Naum Day Trip

5.063 Google reviewsDay trip from Tirana, Durrës or Golem

Lake Ohrid is somewhere between one and three million years old, which makes it one of the oldest lakes on earth, and it is shared between Albania and North Macedonia. The Macedonian side has the town, and the town has more medieval churches per square kilometre than anywhere else in the Balkans.

Experience & Highlights

  • The Church of St John at Kaneo above the water
  • Ohrid old town and Samuel's fortress

Full Description

We cross the border at Qafë Thanë and drive down the eastern shore to St Naum first: a 10th-century monastery at the southern tip of the lake, where the springs that feed it come up clear and cold in a pool you can row across in a small boat. Peacocks walk around the courtyard like they own it, which they effectively do.

The afternoon is Ohrid town itself: the old quarter climbing up from the water, the Church of St John at Kaneo on its rock over the lake, the Samuel fortress on top, and time for lunch and the lakeside promenade. Home over the mountains in the evening.

Good to know

  • Bring your passport. North Macedonia is outside the EU and both sides check documents.
  • EU, UK, US, Canadian and Australian citizens do not need a visa. Other nationalities should check before booking.
  • Ohrid uses the denar. Euros are accepted in many places, but cards and small denar notes are easier.
  • Runs year-round, with a shorter St Naum stop in winter when the boats do not operate.

Good questions, honest answers

How far is Ohrid from Tirana?

About three hours by road, east through Elbasan and over the mountains to the Qafë Thanë border crossing. That makes this a thirteen-hour day, with about five and a half hours on the ground at the lake.

Do I need a visa for North Macedonia?

Not for EU, UK, US, Canadian or Australian passport holders on a short visit. Other nationalities often do, and it has to be sorted before the trip, because the border post will turn you back without it. You need a passport, not an ID card.

Is Lake Ohrid one of the oldest lakes in the world?

Yes. Estimates put it at between one and three million years old, which places it among a handful of ancient lakes worldwide. It is also unusually deep, around 290 metres, and home to species found nowhere else.
