This is the full Theth day: the hike to the Blue Eye of Theth, the village and the Grunas waterfall. It runs from Shkodra because the drive is two and a half hours each way instead of four from Tirana, and that time goes to the valley instead of the road. We do the longest walk first, in the cool of the morning and before the day trips from Tirana reach the Blue Eye, then come back to the village for the church and lunch, and finish with the short walk to Grunas.

  • Theth church, built in 1892 in the middle of the meadow
  • Guesthouse lunch in the village
  • The lock-in tower and how blood feuds worked under the Kanun

Full Description

The church in the meadow was built in 1892 and is still the centre of the village. Around it are the old stone houses with their shingle roofs, many of them guesthouses now, and the lock-in tower (kulla e ngujimit), the stone keep where a man caught in a blood feud could shut himself in and stay alive under the Kanun. Your guide explains how that system worked and how families got out of it.

The walking comes in two parts, about three and a half hours in all. In the morning the van takes you through the village to Nderlysaj, and from there it is about an hour on foot to the Blue Eye of Theth, over rocky ground and wooden bridges with a steeper last stretch, to a turquoise pool under a small fall. The water is around 7°C and some people swim in it. In the afternoon a path from the lock-in tower follows the river, crosses it on a footbridge and climbs through the forest to Grunas, where the water drops about 25 metres into a cold green pool.

What's included

  • Hotel pickup and drop-off in Shkodra
  • 4x4 minibus over the pass and on to Nderlysaj
  • English-speaking local guide
  • Lunch at a village guesthouse
  • Bottled water

Not included

  • Lock-in tower entry (200 lek, about €2)
  • Drinks with lunch

Good to know

  • About three and a half hours of walking in total on rocky paths, with wooden bridges and a steep stretch below the Blue Eye. Boots or trail shoes with a good grip, not sandals.
  • About five hours of driving there and back on a winding mountain road. If you get carsick, ask for a seat at the front.
  • Bring a swimsuit and a towel. Both pools are cold all summer, and the Blue Eye is around 7°C.
  • Runs May through October, while the road over the pass is open.

Good questions, honest answers

How much walking is there?

About three and a half hours in total. The Blue Eye is about an hour each way from Nderlysaj, rocky and steeper at the end. The Grunas waterfall is about 45 minutes each way from the lock-in tower on an easier path with one short rocky climb. Anyone who walks regularly manages both.

Why do you hike to the Blue Eye first?

It is the longest walk, so we do it in the cool of the morning, and we reach the pool before the day trips from Tirana arrive around midday. The village and lunch come after, and the short walk to Grunas finishes the day close to where the van leaves.

Can you swim at the Grunas waterfall and the Blue Eye?

Yes, in both, and plenty of people do in July and August. The water comes straight off the mountain: the Blue Eye is around 7°C, so most swims are short. Bring a towel; there is nowhere to change.

What is the lock-in tower in Theth?

A windowless stone keep where a man whose family was under blood feud could take refuge, under the terms of the Kanun, the customary law of the northern mountains. While he stayed inside he could not be killed. Some men spent decades in them. It is a hard thing to stand in.

Can you visit Theth as a day trip from Shkodra?

Yes, and Shkodra is the easiest place to do it from. It is about two and a half hours each way on the surfaced road over the pass, which leaves time for the village, Grunas and the Blue Eye in one day. From Tirana it is four hours each way, so a night in Shkodra first makes the trip much easier.

How is this different from the Theth & Blue Eye Day Hike?

Both go to the Blue Eye of Theth. The day hike picks up in Tirana or Durrës, four hours away, so it has time for a short stop in the village and the hike. This one leaves from Shkodra, and the shorter drive buys the time for the church, the lock-in tower and the Grunas waterfall as well.
