Tirana City Walking Tour

5.063 Google reviewsStarts in central Tirana

Tirana is small enough to walk and strange enough to need explaining. In three hours you cross an Ottoman mosque, a fascist-era ministry quarter, a dictator's private neighbourhood and a pyramid built as his mausoleum that is now a youth centre with a slide on the roof.

Itinerary

For reference only. Itineraries are subject to change.

  1. 10:00

    Skanderbeg Square

Meet at the statue. The square, the clock tower, and how a city of 60,000 became one of 900,000 in thirty years.

  2. 10:25

    Et'hem Bey Mosque

Inside, if prayer times allow. The frescoes of trees, bridges and waterfalls are rare in a mosque and worth the stop on their own.

  3. 11:00

    The boulevard and the ministries

Down the Italian-planned axis past the ochre ministry blocks to the university, with the Dajti massif closing the view behind you.

  4. 11:40

    The Pyramid

Built as Hoxha's mausoleum, used as a NATO base and a nightclub, now rebuilt as a tech and youth centre you can climb.

  5. 12:10

    Blloku

The former Politburo quarter, Hoxha's house, and what happened to the neighbourhood after 1991.

  6. 13:00

    Finish at the New Bazaar

We end at Pazari i Ri with coffee and a recommendation or two for lunch.

Experience & Highlights

  • Skanderbeg Square and the Et'hem Bey Mosque
  • The Pyramid of Tirana, from mausoleum to youth centre
  • Blloku, the closed quarter of the Politburo
  • The Italian boulevard and the ministry buildings
  • A guide who lived through the transition, not a script

Full Description

We start in Skanderbeg Square, go into the Et'hem Bey Mosque with its painted trees and waterfalls, which is unusual in Islamic art and one reason it survived, then along the Italian boulevard to the university. Then Blloku, the walled quarter where the Politburo lived and ordinary Albanians could not enter, now the bar district.

Your guide grew up here. The parts of this that are difficult to talk about, the bunkers, the surveillance, the family histories, they will talk about if you ask, and they will not perform it if you do not.

Good questions, honest answers

Where does the Tirana walking tour start?

At the Skanderbeg statue on the north side of Skanderbeg Square, at 10:00. Almost every central hotel is within a ten-minute walk, which is why this one does not include pickup and is priced the way it is.

Is the tour available in French or Italian?

Yes, on request with 48 hours of notice. Both languages are common enough here that we keep guides for them, and the demand from Italian visitors in particular is steady.

Can I visit Bunk'Art on this tour?

Bunk'Art 2 is on the route and we finish close to it, so we can add entry at the end for €6 if you say when you book. Bunk'Art 1, the larger bunker complex, is out at the Dajti cable car station and needs its own half day.
